According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Indian capital New Delhi is not only densely populated but also factory dense, and its air quality is among the worst in the world. Power stations in urban areas, emissions from diesel vehicles, pollution from industrial waste and dust from construction work all contribute to the high level of air pollution.

At the same time, the illegal burning of crops in surrounding agricultural areas has increased air pollution in urban areas and added a toxic smog to the air in New Delhi. The project was proposed by architect Znera Space, who hopes to make the air cleaner by removing pollutants from the 91-meter-high tower scattered throughout the city.

According to Chowdhry, the system has two key elements. The first is this hexagonal design of the fog tower. At the bottom of the tower is a filter chamber, which is equipped with a series of filters and air purifiers. The center of the demister is a propeller, which pushes the purified air upward and releases it. “the filter chamber will inhale nearby dirty air and pollutants into the demister, and the hexagonal grid pattern of the demister will accelerate the diffusion of clean air out of the tower,” Chowdhry said. ”

The second is the solar hydrogen fuel cell, which provides energy for the demister. Each element of the demister is connected by a hexagonal “overpass”. “these bridges have a series of hydrogen fuel cells that can capture sewage and decompose water into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis,” Chowdhry said. The energy needed for electrolysis comes from solar cells, and the hydrogen produced by the electrolysis process also provides the driving force for the demister. ”

“each tower is capable of purifying more than 3.2 million cubic meters of clean air per day, reducing the proportion of smoke in the air within an area of one square kilometer around the demister tower to an appropriate level,” Znera said. At the moment, the proposals are conceptual, and it is not clear that they will eventually be used effectively in cities. But according to the construction company, they hope to build a working prototype within two to three years, and they believe the concept works. Chowdhry said: “the concept itself may be a radical solution to the smog problem, but it is still quite feasible.” Our goal is to measure the validity of this concept by quantifying it in a specific area. ”

“among the existing design concepts, the hexagonal tower is a new addition to the existing urban structure,” Chowdhry said.
