Cancer and heart attack: Vitamin D and Omega-3 reduce your risk
A major study confirms the benefits of vitamin D and Omega-3 in reducing the risk of heart attack and cancer mortality.
A major study recently looked at the health benefits of vitamin D and fish oil, rich in Omega-3,. Entitled “VITAL” – a contraction of VITamin D and OmegA-3 – it shows promising results in the prevention of deaths from cancer and heart attack. They were presented at the annual meeting of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), held in Chicago from September 25 to 28.
Nearly 26,000 American men and women participated in this large-scale clinical trial, conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a subsidiary of Harvard Medical School.

Omega-3 significantly reduces the risk of heart attack
After more than five years of study and data processing, it appears that Omega-3 fatty acids, contained in fish oil, are associated with a significant reduction in heart attacks. On the other hand, they show only a slight decrease in major, insignificant cardiovascular events.
The greatest therapeutic benefits were observed in people consuming less fish than the median of the cohort (1.5 servings per week), but not in those consuming more fish. In addition, African-American populations appear to benefit most from this reduction in cardiac risk.
More recent meta-analyses of randomized trials of omega-3s confirm their benefits for the heart.
Vitamin D reduces the number of cancer deaths
Similarly, the study showed that vitamin D supplementation did not reduce major cardiovascular events or the total incidence of cancer. But it was associated with a statistically significant reduction in total cancer mortality among people who participated in the trial for at least two years.
This effect of vitamin D on reducing cancer deaths is also confirmed by updated meta-analyses of subsequent clinical trials.
